Vlad Eftenie is undoubtedly one of the most talented photographers we have in Romania. In frames that capture positive or negative emotions at the intersections of lives, cities, architectures, memories, corners, sunsets or sunrises, Vlad decodes moments and encapsulates them into fantastic visual harmonies. A book that guides us in poeticizing life is much needed.

We all produce images, almost anyone can take pictures nowadays, but photography is a different story. Architect, professor, photographer, storyteller through images and words, great communicator and creator of a vast visual culture, Vlad has all the tools to credibly share with us what he has discovered and learned about photography. Photographic creation, as his <i>Code</i> tells us, is above all a complex psychological, creative and socio-cultural evolutionary process, in which what matters most is what you’ve learned, what you see, how you see it, and who you are.

What Vlad Eftenie does in this book is not exactly photography. Or not only. It’s visual anthropology, an <i>ad vivum </i>museum, social aesthetics, artistic and urban education. It’s also a playful exercise, a forceful statement that a trained eye, well versed in the depths of the spirit, knows what and how to frame, blurs the background, and instantly increases the emotional saturation. For me, this is a splendid book about the connection between image, gaze and memory. About the subjective lens that defines us. Vlad Eftenie’s Code is about us, after all. About latent creativity patiently waiting to be triggered.
